The weather in the towns of Somerset West, Strand and Gordons Bay near Cape Town South Africa is generally good all year round. The regional conditions may differ slightly between these popular places in the Helderberg even though they are very close to each other. For example, in the summer when the South East wind commonly blows between the months of December to about the end of February it is noticeable that the wind maybe stronger in Gordons Bay on a given day than it would be in Somerset West.
In winter months the weather can also be a little different between the towns, the Strand may not have a breadth of wind or rain and a ten minute drive into Somerset West, which is closer to the mountains, may see it windier and even raining. On sunny and windless days the beaches in this area, Strand, Gordons Bay, Bikini beach, Cool bay etc are great places to spend the day particularly if you are on holiday in the region. Kogel bay is protected by the South East wind and a popular surf spot for those looking to escape the “Cape Doctor”.
It must not be presumed that the forecast for Cape Town is a good indication of what the conditions will be like on any given day in the Helderberg region. There are many days when the rain is pouring down in the City of Cape Town whereas in the Strand and surrounding areas the sun maybe shining all day and vice versa. Before you plan anything outdoors in the Somerset West, Gordons Bay or Strand make sure you get an accurate report on the weather and weather forecast for the day or week.
